Dukan – Emotional Eating

20120718-165358.jpg

Emotional eating… Something most of us do at some point in our lives, but can easily get out of control. I emotional ate just now, for the first time since last August. It’s been an emotional few days. The 20th anniversary of my dads death, watching the first 11 episodes of Season 5 Grey’s Anatomy, topped off by my first headache in 11 months (I’m sure caused from crying… over both of the aforementioned things) and the cream on the cupcake? Hearing George Michael over the mall Muzak. Memories of my first birthday in Abu Dhabi flooded my memory. Oy!
So, I bought headache medicine (Bayer in the blue box), chased it with a double shot cafe latte and headed to the movie theater on the top floor and purchased a small container of popcorn. To make it even worse… It’s kettle corn! So sweet popcorn, yay!
It was good. I ain’t lying! And I feel better! Headache gone πŸ™‚

20120718-171702.jpg

Will I comfort feed again? Probably. Will I do it regularly? Nope. I love how I look and feel.

I will continue to eat good food, run 5 times a week and do yoga. I ran in Hong King yesterday morning, until a storm brought lightning! I love running in the rain, but not rain with lightning πŸ™‚ Slow run since the ground was slick and I was being as careful as possible!

20120718-172807.jpg

Want to end on a sweet note. My little baby from last week came in for a visit today…

Isn’t he a cutie?

Ciao!

Dukan – Consolidation Day 65

Saturday was Bastille Day and I chose it to be a Celebration Meal Day!

Daily weight: 147 lbs/66.8 kgs
Goal weight: 155 lbs/70.5 kgs
Weight still hanging in there… It’s amazing πŸ™‚

Traveled to Guangzhou on Thursday. Will be here for 2 weeks.

Friday assisted a woman who wanted a water birth. The patient and her husband gave permission for our marketing department to film the event. Unbeknownst to me there was a reporter from a national online pregnancy magazine in the room as well, blogging live and uploading pics from her iPhone (apparently with the patients permission, lol). The funny thing is, I thought she was our staff and kept telling her to put her phone away πŸ˜€

Saturday was Bastille Day. So far this summer I have celebrated British Day, the 4th of July and Bastille Day all in China. We were invited by the French Chamber if Commerce to a huge beach/pool party at a local hotel. Goodie bags when we arrived included a bikini, that fit I might add! We had a great time. I decided that I would make this my weekly celebration meal. I had BBQ meat and grilled veggies and my celebration food was two teeny scoops of decadent French milled ice cream… Coffee (my favorite since I was an itty bitty) and BLACK SESAME… Holy scamoly! We danced the night away to a live band that played some awesome music and a had 2 glasses of French white wine that caused me to have a headache 😦

This is Rose (my Guangzhou Personal Assistant) and Liza who works in the Int’l Department at he hospital.

Sunday was a routine day in the office. On my morning break I wrote my guest post for AGoodRun. I submitted it for publishing tomorrow… How exciting is that?? And in the late afternoon we headed to the Bud Theatre for a marketing event. I did a water birth presentation for over 400 parents to be… It was awesome. Immediately following my talk there was a live theatrical performance of The Wonderful Adventures of Nils. I believe it’s a Swedish story… Hearing it in Mandarin made it even more fun πŸ™‚

20120716-002646.jpg

I also got to pass out the prizes that we awarded. After the show ended Rose, Liza and I went to the Oriental Palace Arabic restaurant for dinner… Again… Lol. I love the friendly atmosphere and the food is gorgeous!

I’m off to Hong Kong in the morning! So off to bed I go!

Ciao πŸ™‚

Blogging From the Labor Room

Sitting in a labor room here in Guangzhou, China. I’ve realized a few things…
1. I’m glad no one called me until 8 am, as I much prefer my sleep now.
2. As much as I love birth, I am totally ready to handover the torch. I’ve got my fill. I now want to educate about birth and handling the tough births, the business end and my new passion health and fitness!
3. I’m missing home and can’t wait to get there! Come on September!

A glimpse (with permission) into my Chinese world…

A supportive husband and classical music from the phone… All a woman needs.

Quietly encouraging poolside. Another thought, can’t wait for Dr. Viggiano to fix my arms. A contrast… Muscular from lifting and yoga, flabby from years of obesity.

I love the different colors in this picture πŸ™‚

Here’s hoping for a fast, easy water birth!

Kindness, Kourtney, Divorce & Tom Cruise

This should be a fun post πŸ™‚

So for starters, this morning a post on one of the blogs that I follow was about kindness. What prompted the post was ugly comments written on another bloggers page. You can read A Beautiful DayΒ kindness post here. This is the reminder she has there…

I’ve been thinking for a few hours about what this poster says. I’ve not been so kind this past week. I’m angry about a decision here at work that I wasn’t consulted on and I’ve been trying for 6 days to be more zen about it. The cool thing about the people here is that they don’t hold grudges… ME… I’m aΒ GRUDGEΒ holder and I own it πŸ™‚ I just don’t get over things easily. I stew about them, work them out and then throw them out… but it takes me a while.

This morning, once again, something silly and non-evidence based practice came up in morning rounds. Sunday up on the mountain I PROMISED myself to stay zen, to stay calm, to practice breathing, to not care (although I totally do), to just let go. So the past 2 days when something comes up, I take a deeeeeeep breath, say the word zen, think of something positive and don’t comment on it… I’m a big under the breath commenter… sometimes inappropriate words (thank God most of the people here don’t understand English… lol). My personal assistant/translator, Vivi was with me. I went into the stairwell, took some nice deep breaths, said out loud, “stay zen, do not allow it in, meditate.” Vivi asked me if I was a Buddhist πŸ™‚ It made me smile. I got over it pretty quick and continued on with my morning.

Then I started reading the Entertainment news on my morning break. I usually don’t follow Entertainment news… I don’t care what these people do in their personal lives, I want to be entertained by them. Two stories piqued my interest this morning.

First… Kourtney Kardashian had her baby girl. So, why would this pique my interest? Well, she was planning a home water birth and I’m a huge home water birth advocate… in fact, a water birth expert… so I was rooting her on. She had an “all-natural” birth according to her sister’s tweet, but no further info. I’m looking forward to the results… So what does this have to do with my Kindness post? Oh my… the UNKIND comments people made on the story. Calling her a whore and loser and a bunch of other names. How sad is that? Why do people even bother on commenting? I would say that for every 1 kind comment there were 10 or more UNkind comments. I personally like watching their show when I am at home in the States… I don’t have to think, they are funny to me and they have pretty much the same problems the rest do with life & relationships. Congrats Kourtney… I hope this child brings you as much joy as your baby boy has!
**On a side note, this article from Australia has nothing but KIND things… is it Americans that are so cynical and unkind?

And the next news item… Tom and Katie have divorced in just 11 days since Katie filed. I love Tom Cruise… I don’t care about what he practices spiritually… I seriously don’t… I love him as an actor. He always entertains me and I could look at him forever. His latest movie, Rock of Ages is hysterical and the man can sing! And oh what I could do to those gun tats on his err, um, lower abdominal area πŸ˜€ The soundtrack has all of my favorite songs from the 80’s and I walked out of the movie theatre HAPPY… HAPPY, with a grin on my face… I can’t say that about many movies. The high from being happy from the movie lasted for hours afterwards. OK… enough about that movie, hehe… The comments were SO UNKIND after the story that I just stopped reading. Again, why are people so unkind? What is the point of writing horrible comments. What cracks me up is that the people writing the comments write them as if Tom Cruise will actually read them… LOL.
You know what I say… good on them. I’m sure there was a prenup and things were hammered out quickly for everyone’s benefit… especially their child Suri. I think it was very grown up for them to handle things so quickly and without it dragging on forever.

And finally… as I was walking back to work after a yummy lunch at home, I saw this on the sidewalk, while listening to the Rock of Ages soundtrack and the song, “I Wanna Know What Love Is” was blaring in my ears…

Isn’t that what all of us want… a little heart? A little love? A bit of kindness? After seeing the leaf, I started thinking about writing this post. I then walked back a block to take this picture. I’m going to practice showing some love for the rest of the week… I’ll let ya know how that goes πŸ˜€

Ciao!

Dukan – Consolidation Day 56

Thursday was a stressful day 😦

Daily Weight: 147 lbs/66.8 kgs
Goal Weight: 155 lbs/70.5 kgs

I sure don’t like stressful days. Makes me want to nosh around on food… thank goodness I only have healthy choices around me, but even too much of a good thing can be a not so good thing!

My stress centers around changes to my work schedule without consulting with me. They just toss me to the wind sometimes and see where I land. I am about the easiest going, “fly by the seat of your pants” kinda gal, but when it seems to be changes made with the wrong intent, it gets my hackles up.

Then after the schedule change stuff, I went on morning rounds and had to stop due to the stress of dealing with people who give misinformation. Formula (baby poison in MY humble opinion) is passed out like candy here. Women being told that they don’t have any milk in their breasts… it does my head in.

So… two things I’m concentrating on to get me out of my funk…
1. My job ends here in 10 weeks and 5 days and I will go home, for good… maybe, at least for now… and…
2. Β I won’t be doing birth work full time when I go home. I will be starting my own diet and fitness business. I am very excited about this.
Oh… and a 3rd thing… because they’ve changed my schedule to go to Guangzhou July 12, I will be near Hong Kong and being near Hong Kong means I can go to a movie theatre and watch ROCK OF AGES… now THAT will make me happy and get me out of this funk… I saw it in the States last month and I want to see it again! I’m listening to the soundtrack to ROA as I am typing this post!Β

After work I walked to the grocery store to pick up some veggies for the dinner I made for Vivi and Olivia. Vivi is my new personal assistant, having replaced the amazing Kitty, and Olivia is a translator in our office. I wanted to have them over for dinner for helping out with Tits the Cat while I was at home on vacation. Their request… an American dinner. So I made them steak, carrots with splenda and cinnamon and mashed potatoes with aged cheddar… I didn’t eat the carrots or the potatoes… although they both appeared to be big hits, given the fact there was nothing left over! I also made a nice salad with greens, red cabbage, cherry tomatoes and cucumbers.

Vivi and Olivia

An American dinner for my Chinese friends πŸ™‚

While the carrots and potatoes were boiling, I showed the girls how to use the wii for bowling. Neither had bowled before. They did pretty well for their first game. While I was finishing up supper, they bowled their second game and Vivi scored a 201!Β She did almost as well on game 3… note to self… stop teaching people how to play, they’ll beat you! LOL

All in all a very nice night. The girls cheered me up. I walked them down to the corner and got Vivi in a taxi home. I then did a walk around the neighborhood.

Food:
Breakfast: 2 tea eggs, coffee
Snack: 10 almonds
Lunch: left over pork from the dinner out with Jerry… when I heated this up in the staff canteen here at work, the chef came over with chop sticks and had a few bites… lol. I’m working REAL hard on the lack of personal space… real hard!
Snack: 1 ounce aged cheddar and 10 almonds
Dinner: Steak w/ onions, salad and a tea cup of wine
Water: 2.5 liters
Exercise:
10 minute morning flow yoga, Walk to work (1 mile) Walk from work to grocery then home (1.9 miles), Β walk around neighborhood before bed 1.2 miles)

So… deep breaths, positive outlook, awesome soundtrack, meditation… in and out… 10 weeks, 5 days… ahhhhhh

Ciao!

One last pic… my little baby from Tuesday… his mommy IS exclusively breast feeding… that’s a rare thing here! Β πŸ™‚

Cute lil thing!

Dukan – Consolidation Day 55

I am really missing my daily blog posts! I still don’t feel like I’ve caught up from my vacation!

Daily weight: 147 lbs/66.8 kgs
Goal weight: 155 lbs/70.5 kgs

Things weight and goal wise are going very well. I have to remind myself often that I am no longer in the Cruise Phase and can add a few things into my diet! Today (Thursday) is a PP day and so far I’ve stuck to that. On the Consolidation Phase (which for me will be 500 days long) you get to add some stuff back in to your diet, you get to have one celebration MEAL (not day) a week and you still have one PP day a week. Dr. Dukan suggests Thursday as that day, and I’m going to stick with that.

On Tuesday morning I got up early and went for a 2 mile run at sunrise. I then came back and did Chaz’s YOGAmazing 10 Minute Morning Flow workout. The combination of the two is a great way to start my day! Chaz has some amazing short yoga workouts that are easy to fit into your day and he also has workouts that focus on specific areas of your body, which I really love!

I then headed to work by walking and within the first hour was told I was being requested for a water birth. All day labor, difficult birth, as the baby was face up instead of face down, but this momma pulled energy from the universe and after nearly 3 hours of pushing had a gorgeous baby boy with a funny looking head… lol (it’s looking much better this morning!)

On Tuesday evening Alice came back for a night stay over. We went out to dinner with her son, Leon. Alice and I had the salmon with horseradish appetizer and we all three ordered mixed grill. The meat was DELICIOUS!

The waitress that took pics for us kept tilting all of our cameras… so none of us have a straight shot, lol!

Alice and I then headed back late to my flat and I was in bed at 1 a.m. (gasp!!! that is SO late for me!). And we were up at 6 a.m. to get a ride to the train station. Alice had a noon flight to Hong Kong.

Wearing Red, White & Blue on the train to Shanghai in honor of America’s birthday!

So off we went to Shanghai on Wednesday morning… the 4th of July. Not only is this America’sΒ IndependenceΒ Day, but it is also my little sister Nannette’s birthday!

Alice and I were suppose to be on the high speed train to Shanghai, which usually takes about 42 minutes, but we somehow got on the slow one… so between that and the subway ride on Line 2 from one end of Shanghai to the other to get to the airport, it was cutting it close… good Lord I was glad it was Alice traveling and not me, as we all know how bad my travel anxiety and time goes! We, of course, got there with plenty of time and from the pics that Alice posted on her Facebook wall of Hong Kong, she got there in one piece!

Bye Alice!!! It was fun hanging out!

I then got back on the subway and found my way to the grocery store that I shop at in Shanghai and found a restaurant that I hadn’t eaten in before. Sat down at a table with a lovely gentleman named Stern from New Jersey, in China teaching for a year, and had a wonderful conversation over lunch… we’reΒ FacebookΒ friends now πŸ™‚ Β and then I got a little shopping done… mostly a backpack and sack full of groceries to sustain me through the week. I then took the subway back to the train station for the ride back to Hangzhou. I called Jerry, my driver (I love saying that… he’s a very cool dude!) and asked if he could pick me up… he said yes and told me to keep an eye out for the special way he was going to display my name at the train station…

You see MY driver uses an iPad instead of cheesy paper! πŸ˜€ Thank you, Jerry, for making me feel so special and important and for being environmentally friendly!

He then informed me that he was taking me to dinner to thank me for all the referrals that I gave him. He was taking me to the “best Chinese restaurant in town” and inquired about what foods I could and could not eat… the man pays attention! Too bad he’s married with a kid, lol! Just joking, his wife is one lucky lady!

So, he takes me to Nongtangli Restaurant near West Lake and he was not kidding… it was the best Chinese food I’ve had since I’ve been here! I decided right then and there that Wednesday, July 4th, was going to be my Celebration Meal of the week. Not that I ventured too far… I don’t do wheat, rice or potatoes… here’s what we had…

Spicy Black fungi and to die for pork… nommy, nommy pork, melt in your mouth, fall off the bone, better than sex pork πŸ˜€

And pumpkin with a creamed coconut sauce… now this was yummy!

And I had juice, which is something I haven’t had since August! It was fresh juiced green apple and grapefruit… cool and refreshing on this hot summer’s eve!

Awesome dinner, awesome dinner companion. Jerry then took me back to my flat and didn’t charge me for the pick up… such a great guy!

So my 4th of July food was:
Breakfast: 2 tea eggs, coffee at train station
Lunch: Salad greens and a poached salmon steak
Snack on the train: about 2 ounces of aged cheddar that was crumbly and sharp!
Dinner: See above… Yum!!
Snack before bed: FF Greek Yogurt with Splenda and flax seed
Water: About 3 liters
Exercise: 1 mile walk after dinner and 20 minutes of meditation

So how was everyone else’s 4th of July??

Ciao!

DAY 7 – Daily Photo Challenge

Day 07 – A picture of your most treasured item.

This one is a no-brainer πŸ˜€

20120529-135332.jpg

This ring comes with a lot of history. My friend Tammy gave me this ring back in 2000 as a thank you gift for being her clinical preceptor during her midwifery program. I attended Tammy’s birth of her son Landon in 1997 and we have a lot of history together.

In 2004 I was attending Tammy’s sister Cindy in labor. As she was in the throes of transition, she grabs my hand and says, “is that my fucking ring?”. Um, I say, “no, Tammy gave me this ring years ago!” (mind you, we’re all like sisters) and she looks at Tammy and says, “you stole my ring AND gave it away?”… LOL. My reply was, “ya ain’t getting it back, now get this baby out”.

As you can see. Still have the stolen ring. Cindy went on to have an amazing birth 20 minutes later, a gorgeous boy named Brady. Every chance Cindy gets, if she sees MY ring in a pic on Facebook, she asks if it is her ring πŸ˜€

I LOVE this family… I went on to be present when their little sister Rhonda gave birth to Stella 5 years ago… Blessed to serve this family, blessed to count them as sisters, blessed that Cindy didn’t make me give this ring back… I wear it every single day!

DAY 5 – Daily Photo Challenge

Day 05 – A picture of one of your favorite memories.

First off I have so many amazing memories (like the birth of my kids and grandkids) that it’s hard to choose. This is a story with more than one photo about my medical mission trip to Vanuatu in September 2005.

The week before the trip, my very dear friend and partner in birth, Julie Anna Congdon, died from leukemia at the age of 30. Julie was suppose to take this volunteer journey with me and a week after we committed to the trip, she was diagnosed with CML and died 9 months later. I can’t on any level begin to tell you the immense grief I had and I nearly cancelled my trip, but Julie would not have wanted me to do that. She died on Sunday and I flew on Wednesday. There was a storm a’brewin in the Atlantic named Katrina and AA asked me to fly a day early, so I did. I did not find out about the devastation in New Orleans until 40 days later, sitting in the first class lounge in the Fiji airport.

First, I spent 4 glorious days in Sydney with two very generous ladies that I met on a tour in Beijing earlier that year. I saw most everything you could possibly see in Sydney in a whirlwind 4 days, the harbor, the Blue Mountains, koalas, cockatoos, Palm Beach on the back of a HARLEY! A phenomenal and memorable 4 days!

At the Sydney airport, waiting for my flight to Vanuatu, I was obsessed with the fact that I had only 35 packs of cigarettes for a 29 day trip and wondered if I should get one more carton. I sat there chain smoking like a fiend and finally had an epiphany, dumped the cigarettes on the table in the smoking lounge and walked away from cigarettes… FOREVER!

20120527-154224.jpg

After being on this 72′ sailboat for 4 days, I was ready to explode… Lol. I had just quit smoking, one of the most awesome people I knew had just died and I had gone to Vanuatu to volunteer, not be stuck on a boat! The boat owner had refused to use the engine, because he didn’t want to put “money in Bush’s pocket” and there was no wind. I threatened mutiny (hell hath no fury like a chain smoker sans nicotine x 4 days) and he finally turned the engines on. When we were offshore of the first island we were stopping on, I dove off the boat and swam the 100 yards or so… It looked a helluva a lot closer from the boat!

I ended up on this beach and cried and cried and cried for nearly 2 hours… Loudly, sobbing and grieving… Alone, which was cathartic. The tide was moving out and as I sat there I pulled my camera out of my waterproof bag and took this shot…

20120527-165229.jpg

I also wrote a long note to Julie in the sand and watched the tide take the message to her. It was the beginning of the mourning I needed to go through. No one bothered me the entire three hours I sat on that beach, except for the villager who brought me a coconut to drink out of.

We left medical supplies with the aid post worker, picked up the Chief of the village to come with us and headed to the island of Espiritu Santo. Most of my crew were going up “on top” to set up an aid post there…

20120527-165758.jpg

When I say “on top”, I mean to the top of the farthest mountain back. We hiked through forest, creeks and mountains. I was scheduled to sleep one night up there, then head back to the beach for a trip to Wusi, where I would be teaching traditional birth attendants life saving skills in obstetrics. I got 500 yards from the top and could go no further. I had horrible vertigo and hyperventilated. I instead went half way down and stayed in a village over night… These were our typical accommodations…

20120527-170059.jpg
Banana leaf mats on top of shale rock πŸ™‚

The next morning I hiked down to the beach, where I sat with a dog and ate fruit and read a book waiting for the sailboat…. After about 3 hours it came. I really enjoyed the solitude. The next day I began training 32 birth attendants in the Wusi village church. One of the skills I taught them was how to stop a woman from hemorrhaging after her baby has been born. Emily, the niece of the boat captain was my volunteer…

20120527-170733.jpg
This photo brings me so much joy! These ladies came to learn! I was impressed with the amazing colors of their dresses!

I taught for 3 days in Wusi. During the afternoon break on the 3rd day I noticed they were bathing the village cow and adorning it with Fresia flowers around its neck. When I asked Simu (the Ni-Van who worked with me on the 3 day conference) what they were doing, he explained that they were thanking the cow for blessing them with the food for the feast we were having that night in my honor. ACK!!! I’m a carnivore, but I didn’t want them to kill their only source of meat for me! Simu told me that they were honored that I came and that a chief from a larger village (who had sent 3 midwives for training) would send another cow. Phew! I went and thanked the cow, as well, and walked way down the beach while he was humanely slaughtered. It was quite an honor, to,say the least and they use every single bit of the cow from the meat to the hide to the bones.

The following day the sailboat came back and we went to the south western tip of Espiritu Santo to treat people for scabies and do general health checks. This is how we typically got from the sailboat to shore…

20120527-171609.jpg
I’m in the yellow shirt!

We treated lots of adorable babies and kids for scabies and their parents and their huts. It was awful and sad, but reports from the following year showed that the incidence was greatly reduced. We left the medicine there with the aid worker. Here’s one of those cutie patooties…

20120527-171856.jpg

Michael and I held a hygiene class for this group of kids on our 2nd day in the village and left them with toothbrushes, toothpaste and body soap…

20120527-172028.jpg

On the 3rd day in that village (maybe my 2nd week there) we walked through a village to a creek where we actually had a proper wash! And then we found this little chapel in the forest…

20120527-172217.jpg

I left my shirt with Julie’s tears on it at this chapel. I was torn at first about leaving it behind. I held her in my arms the Wednesday night before she died and told her it was OK to let go. Her tears, yellow from liver failure, stained my shirt, as mine had soaked her gown. After a little prayer in this forest chapel I felt it was the perfect place to leave a little piece of Julie. She wanted to go on this trip with me and she did… And I left some of her goodness and light and sunshine there.

In the end, I didn’t go back to the States as scheduled. One of the volunteers on the trip needed medical care on a flight back to Europe. As we sat in the first class lounge in Fiji I learned of the devastation that Hurricane Katrina left behind a month earlier. We landed at LAX and I called my family to let them know I was flying to Europe and would be home later in the week…

I have to say with all the things that happened surrounding this trip, it has to be one of my favorite memories!

Water Birth in China

Just attended the first water birth at the hospital in Guangzhou. First baby for this couple.

I love when I can see birth workers grow and learn to trust birth and it’s process. This lady only had two internal exams, one on admission this morning and another in the afternoon around 4 pm. She was 5 cms and transferred to the water birth room.

At 5 pm she was singing the loudest, sweetest birth song and holding onto me for dear life. One of the midwives wanted to check her, I said no, let’s watch what happens and 23 minutes later her sweet baby slipped gently into my hands and up to her chest. She and her husband cocooned with the baby and there wasn’t a peep out of anyone in the room. I think they were all stunned πŸ™‚

Days like this I love my vocation. Funny thing, as I was changing into scrubs I had a fleeting thought that I was too old for this… Now I’m going out to run! LOL

Ciao!
