Back in Hangzhou

Sunday was a PP day… and boy did it need to be!

Daily weight loss: TWO POUNDS!!!/0.9 kg … WOO HOO!!! 😀
Total weight loss: 42.7 lbs/19.41 kg AND 3.05 STONE (for those of you from the UK)

So we took a 3 a.m. flight early this morning from Phuket to Shanghai… not nearly LONG enough… I know that sounds crazy, but a 4.5 hour flight is not conducive to a good sleep! We then had to take the subway in Shanghai 1 hour 25 minutes to the Train station on the complete opposite side of the city. Then the high-speed train from Shanghai to Hangzhou was 42 minutes… flying like the wind! Then a taxi ride to my flat…. from the time we left Phuket to the time we arrived at my flat exactly 12 hours.

Breakfast: Eggs and Ham in the Shanghai airport with a cafe latte.

No lunch… since we were traveling.
Early dinner: Blackened “Australian Small Calf”… we’re assuming that is veal… hehehe that had the hottest black pepper ever!

Long walk to the restaurant and a nice long walk home… then just relaxing, catching up with our loved ones on Skype and the internet and we both were off to lala land pretty early!

Our trip to Thailand was awesome…. I had the best time with Karen, Dominique and Cathy. We did some amazing things, saw some amazing things, ate meals with people who were affected by the tsunami in 2004… saw how resilient human beings are… when disaster strikes. You pull up your boot straps, rebuild your village, love your neighbors (including the neighbors from across the world) a little more and continue living. We stayed in 3 communities severely impacted by the tsunami… all of them are flourishing and our tourism there helps them flourish a bit more!

The people of Thailand are kind and welcoming… the tour company we used, Buffalo Tours was 5-star! Eve, the travel rep I worked with, was phenomenal, patient, changed things, changed them again and always did it with a smile. She put together a private tour for the 4 of us that we will never forget! Thanks SO MUCH, EVE!

Now, Cathy and I are off to check out Hangzhou… I hope you all have a blessed sleep!

Ciao for now!

Thailand & Dukan – Day 91

Saturday was a PV Day. It also marked 13 weeks on Dukan 🙂

Daily weight loss: I didn’t write it down! I think it was 0.2 kg, but not certain, so not counting it.
Total weight loss: 40.24 lb/18.3 kg

Early wake up to go to Phi Phi Island.
Breakfast: 2 hard cooked eggs and bacon with coffee and water.

Then picked up to go to Phi Phi Island. 45 minute ride to bottom of town.

Then 2 hour ferry ride past some amazing rock islands. According to our tour guide a few days ago, all of these islands and mountains are part of a coral reef, not volcanic rock… Gorgeous.

Once we arrived on the island we headed straight for the beach. Cathy relaxed on the beach under an umbrella and Karen, Dominique and I went snorkeling. Not too much to see, but Dominique found some gorgeous mother of pearl! We spent about an hour in the water…. Perfect temperature.

Then off to lunch, where of course, nothing was Dukan. I said Phuk Et ( 😀 ) and ate lunch, with restraint, I might add. There was some hot as hades clear broth soup with seafood (probably the only thing I should have eaten), some fried chicken wings, sweet and sour something, and veggies in a thin whitish gravy. Did my best and dammit, I’ve stuck to it this entire holiday, but after the nasty burger fiasco from a few days ago, I wasn’t ordering off the menu! To finish off the meal I had two pieces of pineapple, which after hearing for 10 days from the girlies how fabulous it was, I have to agree! 🙂

Back on the ferry for the2 hour ride back, and the back to the hotel around 6. Dinner at the pizza parlor across the road (I ate the meat and onions off the top!) and then back to the room to pack. After packing, Dominique and Karen treated me to one last massage in the garden… Yay! Nice way to end a wonderful holiday.

This really has to be one of the best holidays I’ve been on… Good friends, good food, great tour. A HUGE shout out to EVE at Buffalo Tours in Bangkok. She put together a specialized package for me and it was fantastic! First class service all the way! I HIGHLY recommend their agency to anyone planning on visiting this region of the world.

3 a.m. Flight back to Shanghai, Cathy is with me in Hangzhou for a few dats, then she goes home. We’re sitting on the high speed train on the way to Hangzhou now… Exhausted, but happy.

Ciao!

Thailand & Dukan Days 84 & 85

Ugh! I typed this yesterday and it didn’t save it…
Saturday weight loss: 0.4 lb/0.2 kg
Sunday weight loss: none
Total weight loss: 41.7 lb/19.0 kg

So, I’m going to summarize with pictures… But first, this is what I’m looking at this instant… It’s 648 am on Monday in Kuraburi, Thailand having coffee on the veranda off my room at the resort in the rain forest… Take a look:

🙂 Nice, huh?

We went on A two day community stay. So often we go on holiday (vacation) and hang on the beach, go to bars and see the “touristy” stuff, but we don’t see the real stuff. Well we did. We made soap with the Ladies cooperative, formed after the tsunami devastated their village, taking more than 60 lives, including 16 children who were in school at the time.

20111114-065345.jpg

We went to the monkey reserve just behind our home stay house, where they rehab monkeys that were taken as pets, back into the rainforest.

20111114-065518.jpg

We made thatched roof sections with the ladies co-op and had amazing, authentic food, some of which we helped prepare…it was an amazing 2 days!

Dukan – Days 78 & 79 – Rut ro!

Sunday was PV and Monday was PP.
Day 78: Daily weight loss: -1.8 lb/-0.8 kg (yowza!! YUCKY weight gain!)
Day 79: Daily weight loss: 0.9 lb/0.4 kg … well, that’s more like it!

Even though I ate 3 wedding celebration meals over the weekend, I think this slight increase had less to do with food (because I pretty much stuck to the program) and more to do with the fact that I didn’t get my walks in, didn’t drink enough water AND didn’t have my bran… A bad combination of didn’t haves!

So yesterday (Monday) I made sure I got 2 of the 3 in 🙂 and today I’ll be even better. I was very happy when I got on the scale this morning!

The great news… I got my boxes that I shipped from Dubai to Shanghai yesterday! Wow, what a process going through customs was, but I prevailed, paid about $70 USD in port taxes and have my stuff… YAY! It was like Christmas here. And I finally have clothes that fit… Nice to be back in the clothes I was wearing when I first arrived in Abu Dhabi 3 years ago. Some of the stuff is actually baggy, which made me happy and some of it is a tad too tight, which was the stuff I bought at the thrift store in Miami just before leaving in 2008, in anticipation of losing weight… Well, at least that’s happening now 😀

Attended a lovely wedding this weekend, the couple Chiara and Yang Li (Joe), are the couple who’s sweet Alessandro was born into my hands as the first water birth in Hangzhou, back in May. What an honor to be part of both events!

Now, back on track!! I’m doing a 2nd PP day today to kick my body’s ass into gear! My scale is going to Thailand with me tomorrow and I plan on continuing to win this war of weight!!

End note… My happiest moment came when I unwrapped my painting and she was intact. I missed her and what she represents of the past year!

Dukan – Day 65 2 milestones reached today!!!

Monday was a PP day!
Daily Weight Loss: 0.7 lb/0.30 kg
Total Weight Loss: 35.4 lbs!!!!!! / 16.11 kg!!!!!

So, this will be a short blog because I’ve been up for 23 hours, just as I was getting ready to go to bed last night, I got called back to the hospital to birth a couple babies…. in fact, I drank so much coffee to stay awake, I’m actually downing a liter of water before I go to sleep… BUT………

I’ve lost 35 pounds in 7 weeks and 2 days and that totals 16.11 kgs… I couldn’t be more pleased.  A cool thing that happened today that I wasn’t expecting is that I was able to take the extender off of my bra 🙂 The sad part about that is my bras are too big in the cup, but hey… I’m not complaining 🙂 The hard part about it is that I live in China, where they have itty bitty titties and I can’t find any bras to fit me… LOL

Breakfast: Pot of Fat Free Greek yogurt with Splenda and bran
Lunch: 2 boiled tea eggs
Dinner: 1 smallish sirloin steak, garlic stems and 2 Tbs. Low Fat Cottage Cheese (it’s all I could find!)

So off to bed I go… happy… it’s nice be happy! I hope all of you have a happy rest of your day!

Ciao!

Dukan – Day 64

Sunday was a PV day (two in row, I was traveling)

Daily Weight Loss: 0.2 lb/0.1 kg (actually that a 2 day weight loss)
Total Weight Loss: 34.8 lb/15.81 kg

So, I guess I didn’t blow my diet by eating blue cheese, but I won’t do it again. I’m very dedicated to losing this weight. I’ve set a few goals for myself and plan on meeting them. I haven’t figured out how to make the “goal” bar on the side of my blog, so I’m going to list them here and revisit them every 2 weeks:

1. Lose 5 pounds by my holiday to Thailand with Cathy, Karen and Dominique. Date to meet this goal: November 8. So, that is 15 days from now, and I think that is attainable. This will bring me to a total weight loss of 40 pounds.

2. Lose 10 pounds by my 48th birthday on December 3rd. That is 41 days from now, and I think that is attainable. This would be 45 pounds weight loss.

3. Lose 20 pounds by my vacation to home on January 13.   That is 82 days from now, and I think that is attainable. That would be a total of 55 pounds lost.

That is 1.6 pounds a week between now and January 13. I know it’s attainable… no thinking about it 🙂

So, because of my indulgence over the weekend, I’m going to do 2 PP days in a row and kick my body back into weight loss mode… I want a good head start to meet these goals. And if any of my fellow bloggers can give me an inside tip on how you do those cool goal things on the side of your blog, I’d be grateful for the info 🙂 I am so close to the 35 pound mark… hoping it’s tomorrow!!! I hope you all are having a blessed week!

Ciao!

Dukan – Day 62

Yesterday was a PV day
No change in weight loss, which was a little disappointing because I’m right at the crux of reaching a goal and I thought I’d surpass it, maafi mushkila or as the say in Chinese ma watea (no promblemo).

Still felt a bit crappy in the morning, but had that lovely birth so it balanced it out.
Breakfast: boiled tea egg
Went home at 900 am to try to sleep from being up all night, not happening… Construction in flat above me, kid screaming in a neighboring building, new business must have opened because fireworks going off outside (this happens day & night, in fact it happened at 545 this morning, thank God I was up preparing for my flight!), then the kids at the school were outside doing calisthenics and marching. So, I got up and did laundry.
Lunch: Kath’s bran crepes x 2 eggs.
Back to work to teach class to nurses… Exhausted to the point of nausea 😦
Snack: boiled tea egg
Finished office work at 430 and walked home, stopping at halal Chinese restaurant to pick up dinner, shaved beef with cilantro and green beans and mushrooms with red hot chili peppers. They have finally stopped offering me rice 🙂
Up early for this mornings flight to Hong Kong.
So now I’m on a flight to Hong Kong on what is called a border run. I’m on a 6 month visa to china, but have to exit every 30 days until I get my residency visa, so I have to do an overnight stay and fly back tomorrow. Plan on doing some hiking in the hillsides of the city both days and will have pics to post in my next blog.
Ciao!

Dukan – Day 61

Today was a PP day.
Daily Weight Loss: 0.4 lb/0.2 kg
Total Weight Loss: 34.6 lb/15.71 kg

I had a great day. Nice day at work, chatted with Lucy and Ethel on google chat, chatted with other friends on facebook, lots of emails (accept one that I would really like to get!!!) and then came home and fixed a nice PP dinner and off to bed at 1015 pm for me. Except at 1040 pm I get a call that one of my patients “may” be in labor… just a heads up. I roll back over and go to sleep… then I get up 10 mins. later and throw up 😛 I hate throwing up! I’d rather have brain surgery than throw up, and now what everyone else has had at work for days is inside me!!!! Ugh.

I then go back to bed at 1105 and sleep and at 1145 my assistant calls and says that a different patient is in labor and I need to come… I tell her to give me some time… I set my alarm for 100 and roll back over, and get up and throw up… yuck!!!!! Up at 0100 and walk the 1.5 kms back to work and patient definitely in labor… had a gorgeous baby boy 2.9 kgs at 0558…. birth heals me… I didn’t have any gastronomic issues during the labor or delivery!… Here’s a pic of cuteness…

It's a Boy!

Then I ate an egg and feel yucky again… not gonna eat for a while… lol

So now I’m off to bed… I hope the banging upstairs stops 🙂

Ciao!

Dukan – Days 59 & 60

Day 59 a PV Day & Day 60 a PP Day

Day 59:
Daily Weight Loss: 0.4 lb/0.2 kg
Total Weight Loss: 32.4 lb/14.71 kg

Day 60:
Daily Weight Loss: 1.8 lb/.80 kg
Total Weigth Loss 34.1 lb/15.51 kg

So… turning the scale to the West and exhaling every particle of oxygen in my lungs… WORKS!!! Really should be published so other dieters know the trick 😀

Yesterdays Meals:
Before 1.5 kg walk to work… 500 mL water and cup of coffee
Breakfast: 2 really big eggs that I got from the hospital canteen. They are called “Tea Egg” because they are boiled in strong tea and soy sauce… the flavor seeps in slight into the egg shell and they are pretty yummy! 330 mL water
Lunch: Shaved roast beef with cilantro  500 mL water
Afternoon snack.. not hungry, but 250 mL water
Dinner: Stir-fried tofu with garlic stems and garlic gloves… so yummy! Coke Zero

Stir-fried tofu with Garlic stems and cloves

I think one of the things that kicked me back in to weight loss mode was making sure that I got the water in… it really is so important and I re-read that section in the Dukan book last night… it’s on my nightstand and the last thing I do before I fall asleep. He states that without the additional water, your body can’t get rid of the uric acid built up by eating such high amounts of protein. It is ESSENTIAL with this diet to get in your water! I’ve been very good about it, shockingly, because I’ve never been a water drinker, but there are days when I simply don’t take the time to drink enough… that and the bran… the bran is a must! It adds fiber and helps all that extra protein that your body doesn’t need, flush out… so I made sure I got both in… and viola… progress!

A big shout out to all the support I get from my fellow Dukaners… hearing from you nearly daily, is wonderful! Sharing your tips, trials, triumphs and recipe ideas is making this journey so much easier!

And of course thanks to my family & friends… who love me however I am… and whereever I may be.

Ciao!

Dukan – Day 58

Today was a PP Day

Daily Weight Loss: -0.9 lb/-0.4 kg
Total Weight Loss: 31.9 lb/ 14.51 kg

Well, shuhada… I have no idea how I gained a pound, but it’s all good. I did all the tricks my Dukaner friends have taught me… 1. step on scale 2. step off 3. turn scale towards the north 4. step back on 5. shake scale 6. step back on and exhale every ounce of air in your lungs… none of it worked… 😀

The funniest thing about the gain is that it could not have been from the day. Just FYI, I write on Tuesday about Monday’s diet and include my Tuesday morning (after I pee) weigh in. So yesterday, and really today, I haven’t felt that great. I’ve had a headache just enough to feel it there and a low-grade fever. So I really haven’t been hungry. Here’s what I had:

Breakfast: 1 boiled egg
Morning snack: another boiled egg
Lunch: 1 plate of shaved beef with cilantro on top and a teeny bit of soy sauce
Dinner: 4 chicken wings and a skinny steak (that cuban kind… had it at a Mexican restaurant here in China).

That was it. Additionally, I am totally in ketosis. In fact, I suspect it may be part of the reason I’m having these annoying headaches. But yesterday I could taste the metal in my mouth and asked the lab tech for a dip stick to check my urine (she ended up giving me TWO BOTTLES!!!… score!) and sure enough I was spilling large ketones… which, although I want my body to burn fat for energy, I don’t want it burning at that rate!

After dinner we took a long walk back, about 45 minutes in the nice cool fall air. It was lovely. So I got my morning 20 mins. to work walk in and a 45 min. after dinner walk. I do have to say that I did not get in Bran or 1.5 L of water. I probably got about 750 mL… might be part of the problem…

Well, now I’m off to make tonight’s dinner… not real hungry, but I think my body might slow down it’s weight loss if it thinks I’m starving it… gotta feed it some energy 🙂

Ciao!
