Dukan vs. Paleo… why does it have to be vs.???

I used to follow this blog… they have a lot of interesting information about the Paleo diet… However, he posted this post and one about a woman who failed to keep her weight off after completing Phase 2 of the Dukan Diet (btw… people fail, diets don’t) and I put a thoughtful, respectful response with my opinion which he moderated and refused to post. I think that sucks… If you don’t agree with what I say, that’s OK, get into an insightful debate with me… but don’t just post the comments that favor your opinion, because that just makes you small minded in my opinion. I’m sure glad there are a lot more Paleo blogs out there that value my opinion and educate me about the benefits of a primal diet.

Paleo Works: How To Diet

We get a lot of questions asking how our way of eating differs from say the Dukan Diet or the Atkins Diet. Β Well the latter two are indeed quite similar in their make up and include similar foods although at different stages. Β However many of the foods and even non foods (as may better describe them) included are in fact detrimental to both health and well being. In addition both these diets are specifically geared towards weight loss results and fall short on considering long term sustainability as they are both temporary programs with one focus, losing weight. Β In particular the Dukan diet severely reduces fat intake and relies upon calorie restriction and exercise to provide results. The Atkins diet fares little better as it encourages you to purchase their own brand processed foods. We will look at the Atkins diet a little closer in this series, however for now…

  1. And p.s. to Mike and Katie the owners of the blog… I’ll be more than happy to post your response here… I don’t discriminate against my readers… thanks πŸ™‚

  2. I don’t think it’s a good idea to criticize other people’s eating styles. We all have to find what works for us and that might not be the same thing for everyone!!! I have found a way of eating that works for me but I would never look down on someone else because they chose another method to lose weight and get healthy!

    • That is exactly my point. And in fact… I plan on sticking to Dukan Phase 3 and 4 BUT making it Paleo food, as I want to remain wheat free. That is why I am reading Paleo sites… the info I get from all over the Blogosphere is awesome! p.s. you look fab in your most recent pics on your blog πŸ™‚
I also follow to GAPS sites, I don’t necessarily agree with all they say, but we’ve recently had a lively discussion where the owner of the blog has been more than happy to share everyone’s opinions! I love that!

  3. BoooHiss Paleo Works. I saw the article they posted the other day about the woman who regained weight after Dukan, because she stopped following the plan btw. I didn’t respond but shame on them for editing like that. Not a very balanced approach in my opinion.
Check out http://wholehealthsource.blogspot.com/ I don’t post there since it’s a blogger site and I can’t, but I’ve been following Stephen for over a year. He is very bright and has a lot of good information about things I think would interest you.

    • Thanks for the link, Anna… I will check it out.

I follow the blog (thinking about unfollowing) and read the article about the reporter, as well. She admits to not following Dukan through. Now she’s apparently on Weight Watchers… I hope she can find something that suits her needs, so she’ll be healthier πŸ™‚

  4. I read their site too, but this does slate dukan! I like the idea of paleo for maybe a later stage though. Well, we all know its (Dukan) working for us, so we know it works if you follow it, and I dont think its unhealthy

    • I believe they are entitled to their opinion (as I am mine), but I think you should also not disallow comments that don’t necessarily agree with your reasoning.
I totally like the idea of Paleo for Phase 3 and 4… I have no plans on adding crap back into my diet, but looking forward to using more coconut oil and other yummy things! πŸ™‚

  5. It’s simple to me. If you follow Dukan, it works.

I’ve followed (mostly) for 36 days. I’m down 10.8 lbs and 14.5 INCHES. Yeah inches! I’ve gone out with friends, I’ve cheated a couple of times when hormones kicked in but … when I follow it .. it works. 20.2 lbs to go to goal πŸ™‚

Plus — I like the food. There’s a much better chance of me sticking to it if I actually LIKE the foods I eat …… Thank you for the inspiration you provide us and for sharing this info as well.

    Hugs
    MJ

    • It certainly does, MJ! And I plan on continuing to blog through Consolidation (yikes! 500 days!!) and Stabilization. This program works if you follow it, and if you fall off, it’s nice you can just start right back up πŸ™‚

      • you got it! Like this morning, when I reached for one of my hard boiled eggs for breakfast .. but found out that I hadn’t cooked ’em long enough – ugh. Oat Bran galette instead πŸ™‚ MJ

  6. Ironic, in that you are considering a Paleo diet post Dukan! Sad that they can’t handle a little “competition”. Some people feel threatened when a different diet plan is successful.

  7. Interestingly enough, I wouldn’t have even found out about the Paleo way of eating if it wasn’t for Dukan. I am a Dukaner who eats quite a bit of fat (and cheese – shusss) but I still lose weight. And I don’t exercise much yet (that will change once I’m back on my feet). I like to call my diet the Zealous approach (heh heh). I don’t like people dissing Dukan, as it’s what got me started and it definitely works. Sorry they moderated you.
